If you’ve seen the latest installment of Mad Men, “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword,” you may have noticed that Joan Collins’ character was separated from her husband, Roger Sterling. The new storyline seems to show how divorce is changing in the 1960s: people now are making their own decisions about their relationships and how they should live their lives.
But were they really?
According to social science, that kind of behavior has not changed much in modern times. Researchers have shown that people still tend to have a similar range of behavior, regardless of whether they are single or married.
Maegan Jurgensen and Nalini Ambady of Northwestern University tried to figure out whether people would act differently in a divorced marriage than in a couple that was still married. In an experiment in which they recruited about 250 people, they asked them to perform a task — say, playing a computer game — either while standing or sitting. They then asked participants to recall the time it took to complete the task and report how much money they were willing to spend on it.
Although it has been two decades since the events of “Mad Men,” people still tend to be afraid of divorce, says Jurgensen, an assistant professor of marketing and of psychology. In part, that stems from a lingering, popular view that it is a toxic experience for married couples and that they should be protected from it. But studies show that divorced and never-married people are just as likely to have marital problems as their married counterparts.
And when they do become divorced, people still have trouble showing up to work on time, pay their bills on time and take care of their children, Jurgensen and Ambady found. Those kinds of behaviors, which are rooted in our minds and our behavior, are still the same whether you’re single or divorced.
And those mind-brain connections are hard to change.
“In the real world, it’s going to be hard to change these things,” Jurgensen says. “Even if you wanted to tell people, ‘Hey, no matter what, you should be on time.’ Well, they’re going to think, ‘Okay, that’s nice, but why should I care?’ ”
